rocket

patchJanuary 27, 2008

So as many of you know, my son Joaquin has been working on his 2008 Science Fair Project for his school. We've spent most of the holidays toiling in our garage putting together his Water Bottle Rocket. He was to enter his project into the Science Fair on January 24, 2008.

All of us have put our heart and soul into this project because we knew Joaquin really wanted to do something impressive.

joaquinAll through basketball practices, games (for both Joaquin and Emmy), through the homework and Boy Scout meetings - we put our best efforts into this project for Joaquin. He took the lead (as Flight Director) and put his Mission Specialists to work. We had some failures and set backs but he would always push through those issues and come up with solutions to tackle the problems. I even videotaped the Test Launch (there is a link at the bottom of this page). With the help of the "extended family" - thank you Uncle Steve and Aunt Julie. He was able to gather an incredible amount of data from the successful launches. Now it was time to present the data.

goodLiz took some incredible pictures and she helped him put together the Science presentation board. Joaquin did a lot of research and writing just to present his project. He had to come up with a typed document with his hypothesis, materials, data analysis, references and a conclusion. He knocked me off my Mac more than once.

So on the Wednesday before Joaquin was to present his project - there we all were, working feverishly to put the project board together. We even built a small replica of the launcher and I decided at the last minute to whip up a Mission Launch patch - like the ones for the NASA missions. At midnight we finished.

It all paid off. Joaquin took 1st place in his class and will now be able to compete in the regional contest later. Great...more pressure.

We are so proud of him and I've posted a picture of his presentation below.

So now I can proudly say, "Well as a matter of fact - he is a Rocket Scientist."
