January 2006,

Ok- so my 10 year old son and I have joined the Cub Scouts and we're now going to be participating in the PineWood Derby race coming up on January 21, 2006. My buddy Al was kind enough to update me on the rules and gave us some tips. It had been a long...long time since I had built and raced a PineWood Derby car as a Cub Scout and I wanted my son's experience to be special. I blame my co-worker (who will remain nameless....David Barkalow) with having me surf the internet to find all sorts of neat, cool cars to build. The yellow car up on the left is what the car on the box looks like BUT did my son want one like that? No...way. He's a die-hard STAR WARS fan and wanted to make something unique. I made the mistake of showing him some cool concepts and so he wanted to build some like this...

A Jedi Star Fighter - like the one Anakin used in the last movie. I was able to convince my son that, "Daddy is good...but not that good" so we opted for a ship that could be shaped from the block of wood better. So after scouring the STARWARS.COM site - we found Darth Maul's Sith Infiltrator ship, from the first STAR WARS movie - it's up by the header.

My son said, "Cooooool!" and that was enough for me. I just have to keep reminding myself...this is his project...not mine. :-)

So I made a trip to the hardware store and picked up some sandpaper and stuff. Click on the buttons below to view our progress. I'll update the page as we complete more of the car.
